French Negation: ne...pas for Punjabi Speakers
Getting Started
In French, making a sentence negative is not like English where you simply add “not”. The common pattern is: ne + verb + pas. This is also a trap in TEF/TCF listening because in spoken French, ne is often very quiet or even dropped.
Note: The phonetic approximations below are guides. For real pronunciation, listen to native speakers saying n’ai, n’es, n’habite with actual audio.
1. Basic Formula
Formula:
Subject + ne + verb + pas + rest

| Je parle français. | Je ne parle pas français. | I do not speak French. |
| Tu es prêt. | Tu n’es pas prêt. | You are not ready. |
| Il travaille aujourd’hui. | Il ne travaille pas aujourd’hui. | He does not work today. |
| Nous avons le temps. | Nous n’avons pas le temps. | We do not have time. |
| Ils aiment le café. | Ils n’aiment pas le café. | They do not like coffee. |
Note: Keep the verb in the middle. Je pas parle is wrong.
2. ne → n’ before Vowel
When a verb starts with a vowel sound, ne becomes n’.

| être | Tu n’es pas malade. | You are not sick. |
| habiter | Elle n’habite pas ici. | She does not live here. |
| aimer | Nous n’aimons pas ça. | We do not like that. |
3. un/une/des/du/de la → de
In negatives, indefinite or partitive articles often become de.

| Elle a une réunion. | Elle n’a pas de réunion. |
| Nous avons des documents. | Nous n’avons pas de documents. |
| Je mange du pain. | Je ne mange pas de pain. |
Note: Definite articles don’t change: J’aime le café → Je n’aime pas le café.
4. Spoken French Trap
Formal/clear French:
- Je ne sais pas. (I don’t know.)
Fast spoken French:
- Je sais pas. (I don’t know.)
In exam speaking, use the clear version: Je ne sais pas. In listening, recognize both forms.
5. Oui, Non, Si
| French | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| oui | normal yes | Tu parles français? Oui. |
| non | no | Tu as un rendez-vous? Non. |
| si | yes to contradict a negative question | Tu n’es pas fatigué? Si. |
Note: For a negative question, use si to say “yes, actually I am/do”.
